BBQ! BBQ! BBQ! That’s the theme for today. The weather here is Perth has never been better than today. The sun is up. No sign of rain that all and the chills seems to have disappear. A really warm day with the sun burning high above and I had to put on sun block to prevent myself from getting burnt. Though hot here, it seems that it is still bearable here than in Singapore. The one thing missing here is humidity, the temperature here can be 30 degrees and you will only have droplets of sweat. You DON’T feel sticky at all. And so, the weather is just perfect for a day out at the beach and for some BBQ. That’s the results of praying for days for good weather today….ha ha!
Today was my cell’s BBQ party at Heathcote. This beautiful place at Applecross where the blue skies’ above and the cool waters below. IT is really beautiful, Heathcote is actually a little park on a cliff just beside the coast. Just below is a river or lake with a mix of salt and freshwater. Over the horizon, you can actually see the skyline of Perth City. The view is spectacular. Standing at the park, you can see the many sail boasts sailing in unison in the waters and some people jet skiing at the other side.
This morning, woke up very early at 8am to go down to Canning Vale market with Arthur and Jeremy to get the Stuff for BBQ. Canning Vale market is famous for its very cheap stuff. We got like 20 plus pieces of beef steak for only $38. About 50 sausages for $5 and some chicken too. The chicken we marinated with Char Siew Sauce and make Satay Kebabs out of it. Along with that, we also had some lamp chops, buns and onions. Also, there is watermelon and salad too.
One good thing about BBQ in Ozzie is that it is so much more convenient, cheaper and cleaner than doing it in Singapore. Just imagine at East Coast Park, you gotta rent a BBQ pit in advance. Then you gotta buy charcoal, set up fire and you hope that the grills are clean enough to use (They are never clean). At the end, things are bound to be messy. Here, instead of a grill, BBQ pits are just a metal plate. Like a Teppanyaki. There is no need to book and free for you to use. Do you need Charcoal? The answer is NO! All you have to do is press a button and the BBQ pit will heat up. How cool and clean is that! Then, you either wash the metal surface a little or just place an aluminium foil on it. You are ready to cook and all in less than five minutes. At this point of time, your hands are still clean and you are not sweating from trying to start the fire with charcoal. No strenuous fanning with paper plate is needed. There is constant heat from the electronic heater down below. All you need to do is lay your food and you’ll be set for a great Ozzie BBQ experience. In Ozzie, I also found a great invention. Particularly good for BBQ, here you can buy cooking oil in spray canisters. So convenient, it is packaged like a spray can for your regular air freshner except that it reads ‘canola oil’ or something (please don’t buy the wrong one). So, again, no mess and getting your hand all oily and stuff; just spray oil across your surface and food to get and even covering. COOL!
Besides the BBQ, we also went down to the cool waters down below. It was ah hot day today and the water is just perfect to cool you off. We took lots of crazy pictures and Jith, Jeremy and me actually climbed a tree…ha ha! Maryann brought a Frisbee, we played and relaxed under the warmth of the sun after a really cold winter. SPRING IS FINALLY AT OUR DOORSTEP!
And, I’m not done with BBQ yet. Tonight, went over to Ian’s house. Ian, his sister, Michelle, his Brother-in-Law, Wendi, and me went to this really wonderful place called OGDEN’S. It is located at Gosnell’s Railway Market. This place is superb. Ian’s rating is 4 out of 5 stars. And I must agree to that. It is actually a bar and grill. But a family place nonetheless. When you enter the place, there is a really nice bar followed by a dance floor playing like mambo music. Then, there’s the grills (and I mean REAL grills) as well as the restaurant pat as well. Though there is a bar, kids are allowed to enter when accompanied by their parents. There is this lady walking around making balloon twists for each table. It is somehow a theme restaurant as well. Inside has a very western concept with wooden furniture and an old train right smack in the centre of the restaurant. You can have your meal in that train as well… really cool.
Here comes the food. The special thing about this place is that there is a REAL grill. The menu comes in 2 sections. One is the cooked food where you order and they come ready to be eaten. The 2nd section is that you buy uncooked meat. Whether is it, beef, lamb or chicken Schnitzel buy it raw and cook it yourself on the grills. The portion is really huge. And I mean HUGE! Me and Ian shared a T Bone. I saw another guys steak that is about 4cm thick!!! Anyway, there is a hot plate or a grill there complete with all the sauces, spices and condiments to go along to make your dinner more yummy. I’m not done yet, next, there is this free flow buffet. They offer you a selection of ready made salads. There is even, prawns, mussels and squids FREE-FLOW at the salad bar. Potatoes and vegetables are definitely present. We got onions and mushrooms and fried them on the hot plate with BBQ sauce. Guys, this is the Ozzie BBQ. You must never miss out Onions and mushroom fried with BBQ sauce. Amazing! The price is quite good as 2 person can share a meal and help yourselves to the salad buffet. This is a place NOT TO BE MISS! Food’s good, entertainment’s good, music’s good, ambience good!
So if you are in Perth, there are 2 ways to enjoy some good Ozzie BBQ. Under the bright warm sunny over looking the sea or a BBQ with good music, no frills and under a restaurant environment. You take your pick.
